UNSEEN WORLDS

2D3D DESIGN

Laurie Spiegel is an electronic music pioneer and computer-technology innovator. She is primarily known for her composition software Music Mouse, an algorithm-based computer software. Her groundbreaking work with computers in the 70s and 80s helped lay the foundation for many of today’s electronic noise makers. Unseen Worlds is Spiegel’s second album, with most of its tracks composed using her very own Music Mouse. The album is ethereal and atmospheric yet ominous, making the listener feel like they’re floating somewhere in space.

The goal of this project was to create a poster and vinyl to promote the performance of Laurie Spiegel’s album Unseen Worlds.

This overall album evokes the feeling of floating into space and galaxy, so I decided to play with water mixed with oil to create an intricate and abstract texture. The result of the separation between the layers of bubbles of oil and water mimics the motion of floating around and creates a dreamy yet mysterious feel that reflects the overall lightness and darkness of Spiegel’s album. This album is based more on pulses and sonic sounds rather than on melody and rhythm, therefore the various sizes of the bubbles is a representation of each different pulses.
